Who says we don’t have any cooking disaster stories to tell? I’ve had a couple and the chocolate caramel brownies that I made for friends coming over to dinner one night 10 years ago is my top one.
Despite my good intentions of putting together a magical dessert from two different recipes, getting creative can be a disaster–however, my friends said it tasted “unreal”. I’m still proud of it and will make more in the future.
I searched through a few chocolate brownies and caramel slice recipes from the internet for basic ingredients I needed. Not following instructions quite right, I used my own knowledge (it’s a valid excuse for someone who has been cooking in a professional kitchen since 16 years old, give me a break); I made an attempt to mix the caramel slice filling in the centre of the chocolate brownie.
My biggest mistake was that I didn’t adjust the cooking temperature, setting it too high for blended recipes. Therefore, my chocolate brownies didn’t set properly and were to gooey. But life goes on and my mission is to satisfy sweet cravings from everyone at dinner–and I did! Everybody enjoyed my chocolate caramel brownie disaster (no cap, just facts).
But from this not-so culinary failure comes a teachable moment. If I had just allowed more time to cook the two recipes separately rather than rush it, then I might’ve perfected it. I knew I had time, but didn’t fully understand how long I needed.
If you were to ask me to cook it again, I’d still boldly decide to use my messed up method to come up with the gooiest and best tasting magical brownies ever.
